About Miami Sound
Miami Sound is building a music community for the Gold Coast based in Burleigh Heads. We are passionate about guitars and we've created a space where we can bring together players new and experienced, from all walks of life.
Whether you are new to guitar yourself, encouraging kids to learn an instrument or have been playing and touring the world for years we want you to feel welcome at Miami Sound. We know that “selling stuff” has moved to an online world and we support that, but we also passionately believe that people talking about ideas and sharing experiences is where the real music is made and we wanted to build the shop that made that happen.
We provide guitar and singing lessons focusing on the pure enjoyment that learning an instrument and performing can provide – whether your stage is at home or a packed stadium.
If you are looking for your first or next instrument we can help you. We have a range of guitars with character – and that is what will make you want to pick a guitar up the first time and keep picking it up as you continue to get better and better.
For the performers out there, whether you are playing a coffee shop, small club or speaking to a corporate or community audience, we have a range of public address systems for hire.
If you need a restring, setup or your guitar is in need of a little more tender loving care we undertake a range of repairs to keep your instrument in top form.
All this in a space at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast where we want you to feel at home. That means that you are comfortable to choose the instrument that’s right for you, learn from our staff, from each other and ultimately, play better and sound better!
Gold Coast native and passionate guitar devotee, Luke Attrill began his guitar journey at the age of 6. He has now been playing for 30 years and performing for 20 professionally, both live and in the studio including with Australian bands King Mungi, Motormouth, Lump and Electric Horse with national radio airplay and on ABC TV. Luke is an amazing guitar player and one of the owners of Miami Sound. We should probably warn you about his Dad jokes though…
Career highlights include opening for Ozzy Osbourne, Grinspoon, Karnivool and Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society but the truth is that the joy Luke gets from seeing his student progress is just as much of a highlight.
What makes him a great teacher is abundant patience and an ability to make learning an enjoyable and almost unconscious experience for students. Luke was Richard’s (co-owner) guitar teacher for three years and teaches both of Richard and Karen’s kids. All have different ways of learning and Luke gets the best out of each of them. Most importantly, Luke is all about the enjoyment of playing – a belief that if that comes first the “technical” skills follow – and they do! When the idea for Miami Sound was forming one thing was crystal clear, there was only one person to direct Miami Sounds beliefs into the way students learn and that was Luke!
Richard has been playing guitar for over 25 years and at one point or another has owned a lot of instruments :) Richard also has a corporate background and continues to have a consulting business, but guitar is his passion.
For a long time Richard wanted someone to open that guitar shop that he could drop into with his family, feeling relaxed whilst finding new instruments and learning that next musical idea. In 2017, Richard decided to bite the bullet and built the Miami Sound idea with Luke, supported by the rest of the team and a lot of other family and friends.
In 2013, Richard thought he could play guitar (he’d been playing for 20 years right…). Going to Luke as a student he discovered, in the gentlest and most supportive of ways that there was SO much more to learn. Richard will tell you that he still is not the guitar player he wants to be, but is so far beyond the guitar player he used to think he could be that its not funny. With Luke's tuition, Richard has recorded and published music and now plays in a local covers band. Along with Karen, he also enjoys how musical his kids are becoming and how it bonds three generations of family together.
Richard is the “business” side of Miami Sound's brain, but the passion for what Miami Sound is really about – the music community for the Gold Coast – is what drives him and the team to make Miami Sound a success.
Sales and Administration
Karen has known about Richard’s guitar “problem” for the more-than-twenty years they’ve been together. Guitars stashed in cupboards, mysteriously making their way home, its long been an issue. Karen is taking her fantastic supporting nature and corporate experience (Virgin Airlines, KPMG amongst others) now though and helping Luke and Richard make Miami Sound the music shop where the Gold Coast want to be.
Karen is also a guitar student and is closely in touch with the school community to see how Miami Sound can meet orchestral supply needs for parents of school band kids and also how our teaching of the love of music supports the music lessons that students get through their school life.
You’ll see her smiling face around the shop most mornings and on weekends.
Cat Deller Attrill
Vocal Performance Coach
Cat can SING!! She has an amazingly powerful voice and we are pretty well convinced has no need for a microphone at all in her live performances :) Like Luke she is a professional performer and a teacher, so if its time to get serious about your vocal skills and the way that you present on stage she is definitely the person to see.
Vocal coaching from Cat is focused on building technical skills and confidence, whilst maintaining Miami Sounds core ethos – making sure that its all about the love of music! Improve your singing technique, microphone control and presentation. Whether its for the school concert, your first gig, your next gig or even to build your corporate presentation skills, Cat can make you sound and present better than you ever though possible.
